Best thing I ever put in my overflows was Pothos. Never clogs and sucks nitrates like mad. You do have to cut them back every now and again though.
This is a great idea! I'm going to try it, thanks JC

Pothos only works well in smaller tanks for massive plant setup like as large as the diaplay tank. Put nothing in the overflows. You have a sump for a reason.

uh..... gonna beg to differ here.
and I really don't feel like a) digging around my pothos in the sump to change the socks and b) lighting my sump. Overflows work just fine for me. Plenty of threads around here showing Pothos effectively reducing nitrates. Really depends alot on your stocking levels of said display too

Nothing wrong with a little extra filtration... makes perfect sense to positively utilize otherwise wasted space.
I've been running bio-balls in all my overflows for about 5 years now. No issues, never clogged, never needed any maintenance, supper happy with the set up. I put egg crate (light diffusers) at the bottom of the overflow just above the bulkheads to keep the bio-balls out of the bulkhead holes.
