I thought this could be an interesting discussion topic seeing as ive only been able to find a limited amount of credible information.
Some of the best data I have been able to find on the topic of fish waste and specific gravity is primarily for trout.

Specific gravity for fish feces from fish fed salmon diets was determined to be 1.19 (Chen 1991)
The specific gravity of fish fecal matter ranges from 1.005 to 1.20, depending upon conditions (Summerfelt)

Does anyone know the specific gravity of stingray fecal matter? Or a testing method/procedure to setup and obtain accurate data?

I am more interested in settleable solids not suspended. Such as the initial corkscrew waste created by the stingrays spiral valve in their digestive tract with mucous sheath in tact. Primary nutrition sources/diet obviously play a large part with result variations.

Where im going with this is if we have an accurate number or range to work with it could be helpful for everyone in their water quality maintenance, filtration system design & efficiency.

Effective mechanical filtration is substantially easier to achieve if the fecal matter remains in tact and is not broken up into more soluble particles. The hard part is quick & efficient removal before it has a chance to break up. With a number of people running high flow rates on their ray tanks this can be difficult due to shear forces of water flow breaking apart the mucous sheath, disintegrating into finer particles that are a pain in the ass to catch ;).

yeah but poopology is half the fun.

I've heard of some cichlid people using FW skimming...... It this what you're thinking? Or more of a settling/vortex idea?

Poopology...... :ROFL::ROFL:

Ken we want to know what you know in regards to this feceology. Surely this is something you can share your opinion on!!!

I don't have rays. Illegal in Cali:(
Just got to know that:
Poop SG < 1 = Floater
Poop SG = 1 = Neutral
Poop SG > 1 = Sinker

You ray guys tell me, is the mucus part < 1 and the inside matter > 1? Can someone put some ray poop in your GF's cup and tell me? If it ends up >1, then should be a piece of cake right?

Something about your scientific approach except for the terms "floater" and "sinker" is cracking me up right now. It might just be late lol

Interesting,FW rays have corkscrew shaped poops like some of the saltwater sharks I used to keep.It looks almost alien.
