Are these pictures of the same catfish?

I'm asking because the reported max size (planetcatfish, fishbase, mfk) seems to be 30cm and Carl Ferraris did a detailed report of South American catfish and reported a fish under this name as being 550mm. That seems to match the picture. I can't find anywhere that he corrected this, so I'm baffled. I actually have owned a book on S American catfish by him for 20 years and these 2 pics are on page 117-118 among what are called Sierra cats.

The fish resides in various places, but seems to have both a small size and a large size, if in fact it's the same species.

If you note the table in the attached .pdf, page 193, Doras Carinatus has a wide range of sizes, but all 3 found in the Orinoco were much larger than the 18 found elsewhere. If the species is different, it has a max size of at least 21.5", but likely more since only 3 were found.

Have you tried submitting this to the people at planet catfish? It clearly states in a this scientific document that they were measured up to 21 inches. I bet they will review and revise this. As for the fish in the pics I'm not convinced it's the same fish but I am not too familiar with this genus.

That being said it could very well be a large older specimen. Also PC does not update it's data unless there is new evidence presented to the mods there that can be confirmed. You have the evidence right there. :)

I hoped you'd look and give me a reply! Thanks. I'll send this to them and re-post what they say.

i think they have a specific section for submitting revisions. :) glad I could help.

Thx again. I did post it in the wrong spot, so I deleted and reposted. I really want that fish, but I want to make sure I know which one it is!

Lol, if it really gets that big I would want one also. Would be sweet to see that style doradid in a large size!

I emailed one of the authors of the abstract (Mark Sabaj Perez) who confirmed that 300MM is wrong, that the largest one he examined was 550MM, and that he obtained it from Carl Ferraris. I sent him the photos and he agreed that the skeleton he examined may be the one from the book.

Also, 3 were reviewed and they were 302, 500, and 550 MM respectively.

Forwarded this to PlanetCatfish.

Awesome! is that the skeleton in the document he is speaking of? :) Good to see a member on here pushing towards some new understanding on a wonderful species. This confirmed information should be very welcomed at PC. I am not too sure how Fishbase works, but as far as MFK goes what you have presented definitely supports the 550 mm max size at least in my eyes. :) Also makes someone like me really want one lol. I was always under the impression they stayed smaller. Since I am a big cat lover it is very good news indeed!!!
