I have just picked one of these up for my tank and was looking to get a bit more info on them. I have looked a lot online and there isn’t much on them. I looked them up on the catalog on planet catfish and got some info but was wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with them. I have heard that in theory they can grow to 3 ft but 2 is more common. If I could get some info on growth rate, feeding, ect that would be great. He is currently in my 55 and is 4 inches but plan to put him in my 265 shortly. He is beautiful with a black and blue marbled pattern. The tank is in my room with my pregnant wife so I don’t dare wake her up but I’ll take a pic tomorrow and post it. I had never heard of one and was also wondering how rare they are as well as aggressiveness level. There isn't much on here I can find either through the search button.

Are we talking Bacu aka Oxydoras kneri or Rock-Bacu aka Lithodoras dorsalis?

Bacu / Armao aka Oxydoras kneri:
-- FishBase: max 70 cm TL male/unsexed; max 9 kg.
-- Fishing world records: 70-85 cm; 5-9 kg.
-- Freshwat.; demersal
-- Tropical
-- South America: Paraná River basin.
-- Omnivorous, feeding mainly on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, other invertebrates & some vegetable material.

Soldier Catfish / Rock-bacu aka Lithodoras dorsalis
-- FishBase: Max 100 cm TL m./u.; max 15 kg.
-- FWR: 102-110 cm; 11-15 kg.
-- Freshwat.; demersal; potamodromous
-- Tropical
-- South America: Amazon River basin & estuary near Cayenne, French Guiana.
-- Feeds on fruits when the forests are flooded & on the blades of macrophytes. Acts as seed dispersal agent. Reproduction occurs once a year & juvies are often seen in large numbers in the estuary of the Amazon, in the region of Mario.

TBTB, thanks for the reply I was hoping you would chime in. I’ll get some pictures up tomorrow. If this helps it is marbled black brown and a slight tinge of blue. It also has several spikes behind his fins going towards his tail pointed backwards along the sides.

Or could it be Pterodoras granulosus, which I've heard of called bacu?

Bacu is a common Braz. name applied to many doradiidae indeed. Kneri does not have a common global name.

If this helps it is marbled black brown and a slight tinge of blue. It also has several spikes behind his fins going towards his tail pointed backwards along the sides.

I can picture all three, and even an O. niger :) IDK at what age/size L. dorsalis starts showing all that additional armor. It is much more armored than grannies and Oxydoras in (sub) adults.

It looks just like that one with the larger spike on the dorsal fin and lines over the eyes. I’ll be able to post a pic later tonight after work around 6 or so. What kind is that in the picture, and is it yours?

Yes, that's Necro's Pterodoras granulosus in his tank next to his NA flathead catfish. Rather common doradiid that may reach close to 3' in 10 years or so.

Although happy to wait on pics I think you have either the same species as me or Lithodoras dorsalis. So narrowed a bit. You said it has a larger dorsal spine so very well could be L. dorsalis. :) Either way my is very reclusive and the only way I get to see him was by rearranging the driftwood in my tank. Never bothers anyone, and I've only had him maybe 3 weeks thus far. Not the best eater yet. Hangs out with my raphael or whichever other catfish is closest. Usually it and the Raph are very close though.

The wait has been killing me but I am at work and can’t post pics. I have been trying to get on the past couple days to post from my computer and it hasn’t been working out. Mine loves hanging out in the shadows and hardly ever is visible which makes me think it is going to be hard to feed. He has certain places he frequents however he sometimes strays which makes him hard to find. Hopefully he comes around or can be trained with feeding tongs and eventually just comes out. I am missing a ton of molly fry which is hopefully due to him however it could be due to my aero or other mollies in my 55 for the moment. I’ll post pics tomorrow site permitting and me off work.
