Sorry the words 55 gallon and Arowana just don't go in the same sentence in my brain. Good luck with your rams.

You'll know they are paired when the pair starts cleaning a breeding site or the female drops her tube. Males will always harass females when they're ready to breed but it doesn't always mean the female wants to. You need to keep an eye on them and make sure he's not harassing her to the point of stressing her out. This is where hiding spaces could be helpful.

Rams are substrate spawners and will usually go for a flat, smooth surface like a rock or dish buried in the substrate. A lot of discus breeders that spawn rams just use overturned glass ash trays. They can be a bit shy, so I usually try to hide the pieces of slate in the back corners of the tank behind some driftwood or fake plants to give them a feeling of seclusion and safety. They may not settle down and spawn if they feel they're out in the open with other fish around.

You can condition them with some tasty live foods or frozen treats. Bloodworms, chopped mysis, or frozen brine may be a nice change if you're feeding them dried foods. You can also do large (50%+) water changes and refill with water of a slightly different temperature. These are all stimulants that work with a variety of South American cichlids.

okay thanks, they're on a diet of flakes, pellets and frozen brine shrimp, and i do at least a 50% water change usually once a week, but i might start doing it every 4 or 5 days. i have alot of flat rocks i got from a stream by my house last year, i'll use a couple of those in each corner and put plants up for cover. im just so eager for them to spawn lol i know i'll have to be patient :grinno:

How are those Rams agggresion level I have been thinking about adding a school of the electric Blue strain to my discus tank.

i know, its not his permanent tank tho, hes only 2 and a half inches at the moment. i just felt like a 55 would be slightly better than the 20 gal he was in with 30 other fish his size at the pet store. now he has free reign of the tank and is eating and happy. its just frustrating because i know im not harming the fish and a few people wont get off my back about it. i know they grow fast, and all that, i've read alot about them and i will do everything i possibly can to make sure hes healthy and happy and stress free.

i actually had the 1 ram in with my 2 discus for a couple months and the ram was fine with them, the rams form of agression is running at a fish with their mouth open. none of my fish have ever had ripped fins from a ram. im not so sure about the blue rams tho, never had one.

From my experience rams are very timid naturally, and I can't picture any being happy in a bare tank. Just adding sand or gravel may help, but I think most keep rams n other dwarf cichlid species in planted tanks

Ps don't get mad when people flame u for an aro in a 55g. There are some people out there who don't realize that can b a 30" monster in a couple years, and a lot of MFK'ers are passionate about fish. Just sayin if u don't wanna hear about it I'd forget to mention u have any arowana in a 55g unless it's a qt tank.

alright, again just frustrating cuz im not harming the fish, im not stupid, i know how big they get lol. im also passionate about fish and any animals and im very oppinionated which sucks cuz its hard for me not to say something. i joined this site because im looking for nice people to give me some tips on my fish. not critsize me for not having a 300 gal tank for a 2 inch fish. i care about my pets alot, and my number one priority is to make sure they are healthy and happy. :footinmou
