great and all cured, he is temporarely in my 120 but i will be moving him to my 36 gallon after i give the fish away in it than upgrade to a larger tank when it gets a little bigger and I have some money...

do you guys think a xp3, a 200 gph marineland hob and a a 30 gallon marineland hob(probibly about 150 gph) is okay for a 120 gallon that is a little overstocked?

If it was 2 emp 400's and ur canister I would say ur good until ur fish reach full size. U need to understand the filtration better. An emp 400 is probly 300gph or so once media is in it. That xp3 is a weak canister in my opinion as I've seen them in action. I use my canister for mostly bacterial and load it with sponges.

I use the aquatop 400uv and its a much better filter than the xp's. For more flow I usually leave the center tray empty when my tank is under stocked. I am like most people who got into the canister craze but and returning back to hobs again. My 75 has 2 aqueon 75's which is probly the best hob next to the ac110 just because aqueon doesn't make a supersized model like aquaclear. The 75 also has the aquatop cf400 and a powerhead. My tank has my red isletas and really only have to clean the filters every 3-5 months but I do it every 2.

Oscaroo u have a good amount of fish so ur filtration isn't bad but also think about sponge filters as they are great water polishers.

I think everyone can agree that marineland needs to revamp the emperor filters to get back in the game because they are way overpriced for something that hasn't really changed or gotten better. I love the emp filters as I use a emp 400 on my 20 long but I wanna see a more badass filter from them. Sorry for typing so much

you should THINK about MAYBE doing sponge filters until you can afford more filtration ,,,,for 20-30 bucks you can filter a 120 no problem(2 big sponges+xp3) any way good luck,,, it'll work out ...

Also, you need to keep in mind that there is more that goes into filter rating that just gph. You also have to look at the mechical filtration capacity and the biological media capacity. You are paying for both increased media capacity and flow capacity.

Great Point, so many people just seem to be fixed on the GPH, but to me if the water is not flowing through media what good is it doing. My FX5 moves a ton of water but as filters go its media volume is less then many other canisters on the market. Seems to me I've read that Bacteria actually do better job if given a little more contact time? Look at the Eheim Pro Series the 2078 at 490 gph but smaller media volume rated at like 180 gallon vs. the 2080 at 450 gph but hugh media volume rated somewhere over 300 gallon I do believe? Indeed it makes no sense. Seems to me the industry should be able to come up with a rating standard across the board but like so many other things these days...it's marketing

I switched some filters around in my tanks and ended up with a marineland penquin that is 200 gph and a pe.quine biowheel that is 150 gph... I will be getting a other filter before my fish are full grown...

Marineland filters are junk, Aquaclear all the way, way more versatile, a sponge and load the rest with Biomax, best designed HOB filter there is and most reliable, no cartages or pleated filters to change, and easy to keep clean. I run them on all my tanks from 3 gallon-90 gallon. the work horse of the fish keeping world.

while I agree the AC's are great, I happen to have 2, 5 year old Emperor's and a Magnum thats almost 20 years old. They are old school, but far from junk.
