Quick question about wood in the tank..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes I realize that, anything that goes into my tank gets boiled beforehand. I know you can put wood into your tank that you "FIND", same with rocks, etc.

I just wanted to know if anybody had done this before with wood.. that isnt quite "perfect", which the 30 page PDF didnt answer. A simple yes or no would have been much easier for you, and easier for me to understand. :)

Meh. I put minimal effort into it...I have the attention span of a fish.

Cedar is probably not a good wood choice and some pine even very aged can still leach resin traces into the tank. The older the better. Hardwoods are best. Also wood from the ocean is really good because the years of salt water have enabled chemical reactions that destroy a lot of natural toxins in some sap. Just watch out when collecting at a beach that has creosote balls, a type of natural tar that comes not from oil drilling but from natural "seeps" on the ocean floor. You sometimes see it here a few miles north of Cocoa Beach. But AT Cocoa Beach itself there is none. The proscription against bark is not 100%. I have one very gnarly root wood piece, it's even pine, Slash Pine to be precise, collected from a live tree growing directly into Juipter inlet in 100% saltwater. It has not harmed the 30gal tank or it's inhabitants in the three years I have had it. It still has root-bark on it. It came from roots that were not underground but were exposed by erosion so that they grew bark for protection. Yes, I am ashamed, I did cut it off from it's parent tree and then break up the cut mark to hide it. I did destroy a piece of nature. NOW I could not do it again. It was a stupid selfish kind of collecting that I no longer do or support.
