Thanks....and to be honest I am not overly keen on them with too big a humps, so fingers crossed it won`t get too big lol.

No comparison to africans, in terms of personality. Apples and oranges. Wellcome!
 
Welcome. Ive done the african cichlid thing and quickly switched back. Its just not the same. I would say african are more aggressive version of community fish, they come to the glass for food and they recognize you and are active and colorful and all that but, no african will try to kill u or the family dog through the glass like a midas can ;) welcome.

Your fish looks like a male to me, I would be very surprized if it wasn't. Depending on it's genetic make up it may or may develope a hump. Amphilophus Citrenlum (Midas) usually develope a pronounced hump Amphilophus Labiatum (Red Devel) do not gennerally develope as much of a hump while it's present in some fish it is generally less pronounced. A cross between the two species will have a hump varying in size depending who's genes are dominant. I would expect that by 7, 8" you would be seeing a hump my guess would be this fish will not develop much of a hump and might stay more Labiatus like in appearance. It is a good looking fish, I would keep it if it was mine.

yeah I did love the african cichlids! especially the tropheus...but must say the best african fish I had was my tilapia buttikoferi!! he was just downright awesome!! the marines were great (I kept triggers and angels mostly) but it became a chore in the end....

Thanks, and I must say he does look more like a red devil...he has the pointed mouth/lips and quite protruding lips....I really hope he doesn`t get too much of a hump to be fair, as with his more streamlined red devil look I wonder if it would look odd?....it suits the much deeper bodied and chunkier midas cichlids perfectly though!....he is staying by the way, I am taking Miguel`s advice and going to try for a male only community of similar sized and tempered fish.
 
ok I have managed to (I think) sex my little jag.....I am 99% sure its a male, he is around 3 inches and I noticed his papillae....and it looks pointy like the midas/red devil....it appears to point more towards the anal fin though, but he is a little overweight (I have never known a fish eat so much for its size!) if he is indeed a male then thats a good thing, BUT will he be ok to be left in there at such a small size? or would I be better off still trying to source a larger male similar in size to the midas/devil?
 
Just try it and be watchfull. But two males is short for the comm you are seeking. You need to disperse/ distract agression.

ok will do, thanks....I am going to a shop quite a way from me at the weekend, they are usually very good for stocking larger cichlids....and am REALLY hoping they have a butti! but if not....what others would you suggest to keep an eye out for?
