Basic construction techniques that a carpenter would use will be more than adequate and most likely over built. Go to your LFS and look at the tank stands that are built to support large tanks, there's not much to them. Most DIY stand builders are guilty of over building and there's no harm in that. It's better to over build than to under build.
My commercially built 125 gallon stand from my LFS is light and I can carry it myself. I'm about to build a stand for an 85 gallon tank with the same foot print as my 125 and will probably need help to move it when I'm done. I will be using 3/4" plywood to build it.
