whoops! and a sexing question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Some sample males i keep with 3 male midas this has worked in a 125 with overstocking, feeding and temperature tactics to minimize aggression. Never had a problem.

Midas range from 3"-11"
Male honduran jag
Male blackbelt 10"
Male dovii 4"
Male texans 6-7"
Male red texas 6"
And other smaller ca an sa fish

Imo the best time to add and experiment with tankmates is now while young. Keep a divider and plan b handy as all fish are not created equal and while most suggested combinations work well you might get that one individual who rebels against the expected behavior. Midas are rewarding in the end and a fish worth going through some trouble for.

He is stunning. Do whatever it takes to keep him. Years from now you will love yourself for keeping him!!!

Thank you, and I will do :)

What about a male blackbelt mine was super aggressive I couldn't compare him to a Midas or a devil but when I bought him he was running the tank with two slightly smaller midevils in it

Thanks for the suggestion! something definitely looking into!

Thanks for that! this thread has been a great help!! really excited about trying to get some suitable tankmates now!

I do not believe in dividers. I believe in observation and taking the looser out.

Sometimes one seems to be lossing but is not.

Only losser that needs to be taken out immediately is the one that giges up and hides in an akward position behind an impossible space.

If this does not happen, and the looser still comes out, and FEEDS, it will work.

Dividers never really solve the issue. They seem to, but they don't.

Hmmmm arent there some instances where the use of a divider to reset the alpha role and let the new fish establish itself and its dominance first one of the tactics to add tank mates to a otherwise non tolerate dominant fish? Ive done this at time where i separated the bully so he doesnt immediately charge at the new fish that might be showing weakness from entering a new tank. Then once the other fish gains confidence and begins swimming with the pack i release the what was once the alpha fish. This has worked for the most part but i havent had to do it in a while , sometimes when i receive a fish in the mail i do the other way around where i isolate the stressed recovering fish with divider or different tank until he gains confidence then release him to the pack. This is my experience but when trying to make something work its worked for me. I had to remove my male jag twice before he was accepted.

If we are not talking about protecting the obvious loosers, my way is to take the alpha out.

When he returns the others have regained confidebnce and he has lost some alphainess.

I love the ever changing dynamics of an all male comm.

And i lrefer spare tanks than dividers, Enmily. dividers only increase the rage in my opinion....for me they have never solved anything with continuity.

I dont like dividers either. Because theyre un sightly :P but i usually do remove fish to another tank instead. But i however remove the weak one and let him build confidence as usually in a new tank fish always take a few days to become outgoing, eat and with certain fish, get off the bottom of the tank. And i usually do this because the abuser is usually a much larger fish and no new fish unless its under extreme circumstance is worth upsetting, or stressing and old big bull in the tank. I have had issues where no matter who no matter what there are just some individuals that terrorize everyone and anyone and no tactic will help. But this is where he much disputed trial and error rule comes in and while i practice this others will advise against it.

That is wht i love about this. We go along different routes, our objective is the same, and we both end up mamaging well whaat we set out to do.

no problem at all guys, its always great to hear differing opinions on how to get similar results! and nice to see it discussed in an adult way too! the reptile forum I moderated on is often far less grown up in its discussions! lol....I`m really itching to get out and go on the hunt for some tankmates! but have to wait until tomorrow....I`m like a big kid waiting to go to the sweet shop! :D lol
