getting a gatf, what to look for when picking one?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had people get back to me that if they have too many dithers, they get brave and pick on the tiger. 3:1 seems to be the ideal ratio.

Good point. I have used the 6:1 with my Cichlids but given the relative timidness of the tigers, as compared to Central American Cichlids, 3:1 makes perfect sense.

so today i got me two of the gatfs or so the label says, here are the pics right befor introduction to my 80gal endli ornate arowana tank, everyones under the 8 inch mark right now.

the bichirs have ate the tinfoil barbs i got just got one albino left but he has showed them right to the frozen krill so thats a good start.

Also, be VERY careful keeping them with a gar. Gar are notorious for killing and eating ATF. ATF look just like the shiny Notropis species fish that gars prefer for food. I would separate them. I've never heard of successful cohabitation between ATF and gar unless the ATF is MUCH larger.

These guys will top out about 2' in an aquarium and will take a LONG time to get there. It'll get to about a foot in a year and then about half an inch a month after that.

They won't bother the bottom feeders. As long at the bichirs don't bother the ATF you should be fine. I know ornates can be pricks. These guys thrive in very different conditions than aros and most catfish. You're gonna have to make some changes and buy some powerheads.

They're actually very hardy fish, you just have to give them what they need or they get sick and die.

Lots of good info out there. Good luck! A lot of guys prefer the way VATF look over goliath anyway.
