How long does driftwood tan?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had to start buying indian almond leaves to get my tannins back up after 9-10 months with my malaysian wood. no carbon and no plecos though.

I boil my driftwood and all is good on my tank

always a good idea, but for those who have driftwood in the 3 to 4 foot range it's tough to find a pot big enough ;)

^ once the carbon depletes, it starts releasing the toxins back into the water... So remembering to change it is quite regularly is a good practice...

But purigen can also help remove tannins extremely well :)

Discus appreciate tannins, they are somewhat anti-bacterial, in fact the waters they come from are considered "black water" because of tannins.

Yeah but I don't have wilds I have domestics so they've never experienced it and it wouldn't make a difference to them since they've grown up in tap water and bare bottom tanks there whole life
