How many dog people?

OK, thanks. Beautiful dog. I imagine there are a fair number of Pyrenees in Portugal? My mom breeds Pyrs and has made quite a few trips to Spain/France.

Nope, Pytenees you do not find ( of course some poelple keep the, ) but they are from the nort of spain and france, where the Pyrenes Mointains are.

After the revolution in Portugal, 1974, our Rafeiro Alentejano and cao de gaso transmontano ( and all the other bg farm breeeds ) wer nearly extinct because they aer conotated with fascist farm owners.

Upon their recuperation a lot of spanish mastiff ( short hair ) as well as pyreeneens ( long hair ) were used. The basismwe had was not sufficient.

That is why you now have litters with typical ones ( big and ahort haired ) and some, as mine above, who come with longish hair....

So yes, some pyreeneen blood must still be traceable, but very slim.

Miguel, have you ever owned German Dogues?

Never. Find them beautifull. All types if colour, but not specially intelligent.

This reminds me extremely of the Bouviers history. Almost extinct after WWII, breeding back with other breeds, etc.
Tbh, although I know a lot about large dog breeds I didn't know those 2 breeds. Did you see your Rafeiro kill the wolves or did you just find 2 corpses and him with a bloody snout.
I also like the German and Danish dogues a lot but sadly they are even more prone to bone ilnesses and hip injuries than other large dogs.

Can't edit my post, so I'll do a double post.

Miguel, do you know of a profile on the Rafeiro do Alentejo and the Cao do gaso transmontano ( I hope I got the spelling right) in German or english? I can't find one :(

That is interesting, I can definitely see the genes in your big guy.

Not easy. Will try.

It is cao de gado transmontano.

I swear you posted gaso :D Probably a typo.
Have you ever owned a Rottweiler? Also beautiful molossids but sadly have a reputation á la Pit bull or AmStaff.
