Wels Catfish (Silurus glanis) Grow out and informational thread!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Check out Dolphin Fiberglass Products too. They are eminently reasonable for their prices. You can get a 1,000 gallon plus tank for about $2000. It won't have a viewing panel though. I think it'd be hard to build a 1,000+ gallon pond right for that price.

Wow amazing link thank you!!! :)

I like their "Grotto" aquariums/ponds. Very reasonable at a price per gallon ratio.

I'd think so. Those grotto are pimp!!!!

Here is mine albino wels

In that case this will be my last update! :p lol, jk. He's cruising around the tank I'm watching him in the dark.

**** i made a typo. I meant it will be nice to see someone who DOESNT "suddenly stop updating". A lot of people get wels and then....who knows what they do with it. I think the catfish master will do much better!

How did you retouch that photo like that? :) lol, teach me!!!! I like taking good pics, but don't really know how to edit them well.

It's cool I knew what you meant lol.

Adobe Photoshop CS4: autotoner, adjustment to levels, slight bump in saturation and slight bump in contrast. Really a quite easy touchup. :)

Thanks for the tip!

Necro if you have any pics you need cleaned up for your catfish ID thread or otherwise, hit me up and I'll be happy to help you out.

Edit-

Oh, and a hint for the photography: get a remote hot shoe and a speedlight. Set the flash on top of the tank so the light comes from the top down and use your kit 18-55ish lens that came with your camera at about f4 to f8 with an ISO of 100-200. Should give you crystal clear shots.

If you don't have a speedlight, try not to use the flash. Go for a lower fstop of 2-3.5 and an ISO of about 600. It'll be harder to get clear pics, but with how catfish hold still better than my damn tigerfish I don't think you'll have too much trouble.

I can't wait till my wife gets back from Florida in a few weeks so I can start practicing again. She's been gone with the camera Since October. So no good pics for me :( lol

I saw a few threads about wels catfish here on MFK and I was always under the impression that they were illegal to own in the USA. I have done extensive research and there is not a full ban in effect on the Wels Catfish......YET!!! I did find this bit of alarming link that I seem to have misplaced. TBTB if you still have it could you please post it up? ;) tnx. ... The Current ban is for fish that have SVC(SPRING VIREMIA OF CARP). Any fish that is a catfish or carp from the countries where it is known to occur must first be tested before importation...

I think this is what you are referring to.

Here is a good reason why people should watch what they say on MFK or any fish keeping forum. They are using us to try and get a full ban on S. glanis.

The cam I bought is a pentax WG-II water proof rugged cam. The vids and pics are amazing from it. The issue is just overcoming the flash on the glass as you stated. I don't know if that is compatible with this cam. I have a suction cup mount that I bought for doing in tank vids, but I think I need to get a full sized tripod also to help with stability when shooting without the flash and using an external light source. lol, for now I will have to hold up the hood light at an angle and click away :) I saw there is a remote control for underwater uses with this cam as well. It has some really nice features for a compact waterproof cam. I'm blown away by it.

I think this is what you are referring to.

That's exactly it!!!
