Going to try some quilt batting in my FX5

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well ya but ive read places guys with reg vinyl hose will slip off with clamps one guy came home from work and found a empty 180g tank lol
Holy cow. I would freak out. I have hardwood floors. Would ruin them. I check for leaks every morning and at night but that has more to do with my OCD than anything.

Be very careful with quilting batting as many companies put additives in it. In addition, it can break down faster than actual 'filter floss' so you could end up with problems later on.

OK...yeah I made sure it was 100% polyester with no additives. I only put it around my sponges on the outside of them. It totally filled up the bypass space and the current is very strong out of my spray bar. Actually, the trapped air was gone within 30 minutes or so whereas before it would take 3 hours or so. I did notice some of my rings that were in my bottom basket were actually looking pretty bad. They were the rings that came with my AC110 and I just transfered them over when I installed the FX5. Anybody heard of those actually degrading within 2 years time?

Wow. Well the hoses were very hard to get on, had to soak them in scalding water then slip on the valves, they were more then tight once they cooled but I added the stainless clamps for security, no way they would come off, I think it's more or less where you mount the clamps in reference to the valves, there are ridges on them and if you mount the clamps on the end or all the way up Imo that may be an issue, smack dab in the middle looks to have the most resistance. Either way if I had any doubts of it leaking there is no way in he'll it would be running atm!

Thanks for the heads up, that would be horrible!

Most ceramic will degrade eventually, their not made to last forever and the friction and current inside a canister is crazy whereas in an ac110 it wouldn't be a problem , all the rings are constantly moving and vibrating in the can that is why I switched to api Chem stars, once I found ceramic debris in my motor house I said no way.....

I have never used the Chem stars. I will check them out. What you said about the rings that come in the AC110 make sense. I think I will try the Chem stars or maybe Seachem Matrix. I will check out both. What quantity will I need to order to completely fill two baskets in the FX5?

depends if you get reg matrix or pond matrix.... the pond matrix is about the size of gravel basically quite largei ordered 4litres thinking i can fit 2 litres in one basket like it should but i think i was only able to fit 1litre or so in a basket since it so large, but it seems to really work well ! i had 40-80ppm nitrate and about a month later after having 2 baskets of pond matrix it has pulled my nitrate down to 20ppm or so... take a look on seachem's website about the matrix to see what is best for you size wise as they say the bigger size are suited for canister's and also explains about the nitrate reducing it is capabale of

Ok...thanks. I think I am going with the chem stars.

OK...so I will want to order 80 total and 20 per bag at $10 so that is roughly $40. I will probably go ahead and order 5 bags to get the free shipping. Thanks for your help.
