Large red belly with smaller ones

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put an Oscar in their to make the larger one feel more comfortable and it worked. So far so good. I will eventually take the Oscar out whenever I set up a new tank.

I genuinely hope your tank doesnt turn into a meat grinder, but I wont be surprised if it does.

I think the chances are that the Oscar will be killed before any of the piranhas and I am okay with that. Like I stated in the piranha tank mates thread, the Oscar was a fish I got for free and he was originally in a tank with other Oscars as well as other fish but my other Oscars didn't like him and beat him pretty bad. He is doing a lot better in the piranha tank than he was in the other tank. If he were still in the other tank I have no doubt in my mind that he would be dead already.

Whatever works, some might think that's cruel but hey if it saves a piranha **** it ^_^

LOL That is exactly what I was thinking when I did it. I feel bad tho because I like Oscars. Now that the little ones aren't ganging up on the bigger one anymore I wish I had another tank to put the Oscar in. He obviously can't go in the tank with the Oscars because they will kill him and he can't go in my African tank because he is big enough to swallow some of them and the ones that he can't will gang up on him and kill him. Even though he is getting along with the Ps now, I believe that if he is in there long enough he will be food. I want to add some danios for a distraction, but I am sure the Oscar will eat them. If I can find out how to access the web cam on my laptop I will take a picture, it is an odd sight.

I honestly dont care about the oscar eventually getting eaten, but he's definitely big enough to beat up on or kill them little reds and the big red is very capable of making one of those reds completely disappear in one sitting. Im not afraid for the big red or oscar (yet). Those little guys are the ones that I think will get hurt.

Like I said though, I do hope everything works out well. Im not saying it cant, Im simply saying thats not the course of action I would have taken.

I understand what you are saying. I was thinking the same thing when I first put him in there. There was a bigger size difference than I was anticipating. So far I can say that the small ones are the aggressors when there is any type of aggression. There was a decent amount of aggression the first 4 or 5 days. Ever since then it has servery calmed down. The little ones still nip at the Oscar from time to time, but he quick turns to face them and scares them off. I care more about the small ones than the Oscar. I know it would be easier for the big P to eat one of the smaller ones, but judging by his look and movements I believe he thinks about eating the Oscar. I truly believe the Oscar is in more imminent danger. I think what also attributes to it is that they guy I got him from primarily fed him shrimp so he is not as aggressive as a piranha that would eat live food. I am having a difficult time getting him to eat different types of food. I have some pellets that all my fish go crazy over and he doesn't seem to like it. The only things I can get him to eat are shrimp, sinking shrimp pellets, and crayfish. The picky eating part is what most scares me. Maybe instead of giving the Oscar a new tank, I will put the big P in a different tank and try to find two other bigger ones.
