Put it in a 5 gal bucket, rinse with a garden hose, or I just put it in the bathtub under the faucet.

I rinse mine with warm water for 15-20 min, stirring it up a few times till the water runs clear!

Iuse pfs in 1/2 my tanks. I got it at a local hardware store. I got it too thick in my first tank and had problems with it turning black. I thinned it down and this also allowed me to vacuum it better. When it begins filling the tube I just slow the siphoning down a little and it falls into the tank again. It never did cloud my water any and it is great for my eels.
 
I buy my silica sand at a place that sells swimmimg pools, it cost $5 for a 75lb bag. It's a clean white fine sand requires very little rinsing, I have 150 lbs in each of my tanks, 125 & 150 been using it for several years, no problems, when you vacuum the waste, hold the tube at an angle and just skim the surface

I might have to try this. I'm really getting sick of gravel.
