Do you use salt in fresh water tanks? And how much salt do you use?
What are the pros and cons of using it?
I use salt for years. I'm debuting if I should continue use salt. I just don't like the salt buildups on top of the tank.
What do you guys think?

I only use it when I treat for ich, or brackish fish. I don't see the need for constant use.
NaCl is not an integral part of most fresh water habitats, unless very near the sea, or a salt flat.

I just afraid of bad bacteria attacks. Since bacterias don't like salt.

I use it when healing larger than normal wounds. Some of my fish have injured themselves to the point where I add it for a week or so to aid in the healing process.

Long term? I don't see much point in it.

Having salt in your tanks 24/7 only allows the bacteria and parasites to build an immunity to salt. This is why the ick parasite often times can no longer be killed with just light salt dosing.

Good point

Parasites/ich, etc. will come from new fish, so in that case, a quarantine tank with some salt isn't a bad idea. Once fish are cleared, I'm not sure there is a further need as far as parasites go. For other things (injuries, hard water fish) I think there's a case to be made for it.
