It's just a good idea to because you need pristine water conditions to have a reef to make sure everything is in check. It's too easy to kill everything in a reef tank with even the slightest change.

Well its just the only thing holding me back is that i worry even if i bought the tunze i might still have microbubble problems. Last time i turned the skimmer on it was SOOO bad within 30 seconds you couldnt even see the live rock in the tank. I mean it had zero visibility. I have tried everything in the book to stop it, lowering the flow by raising the intake strainer, adjusting the air input, i even took apart the skimmer and tested it in a bucket and it worked. Then i put it back in the tank and it didnt.

If you decide to get a refugium and put it under the tank then you shouldn't have that problem, I have the new style coralife super skimmer 65 and its a pretty big skimmer so i didnt want it on my display and it also makes a lot of micro bubbles but sense I have it in my refugium, no micro bubbles get in the display tank.

I have a busted ass sea clown skimmer, so I cant speak for all skimmers. That being said, as the thing is breaking in the bubbles are less and less.
 
I have a coralife super skimmer on my 75 gallon "reef" (only about 6 corals :p) It produces the micro bubbles a little bit, but it is worth it because everyday it gets nasty brown stuff out if the tank. It is pretty much spongy and wet fish poop, without a skimmer you are allowing that kind of stuff into your system.

I have the same skimmer on my 20 gal, mine also gets a bunch of nasty junk out of it, it smells terrible but at least I know its working well.
