OXFAM: "100 richest people could end world poverty"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im a full time student and only make 1500 a month for my family of 4, if a person wants it bad enough they wont make any excuses and will make it happen

This is all well and good. IMO education should be a right, but how does someone in a $$$ poor demographic, who maybe also has a family to support, pay for food rent etc while taking advantage of that?

No, education is not a right. My parents came to states with $200. My dad was a grad student and my mom worked as a house cleaner with work permit. Total household income around 20k a year. With no public assistance, they saved enough money in 7 years to put me through college without any debt.

My cloth were from Kmart, no real Christmas or birthday gifts no car in high school, no dates either, but a college education I got; and no debt afterwards.

People who complain of poverty and
hardship in the western country for the most part do not impress me. Sorry.

Superior education is not a right, per se. You are right.

The opposite applies to school and high school education. That is a right that should be seriously taken care of by the states through the means of taxes.

You surely belong to those who have had a nd felt true hardship in life, Silicone Valley, and made it through and mmade it through good. Some of the best professionals I know ( also coming from one of the poorest countries in western europe ) have the same background as you describe.
That takes fiber, that takes wanting it, that is rare, but those who achieve it deserve all credit, imho.

The only downside, is that they get so granite hard that they do not respect ( or even understand ) that some have got there also, favoured by luck or more means, and that does not mean that they are undeserving.

Actually my hardship was nothing when compared to my dad's life. His generation saw real starving...it's not missing a meal or so, I mean the sort of malnutrition that left him with delayed growth, at end of high school, he was still 1.3 meters tall(at end of collage he somewhat caught up at 1.65 meters due to better food).

He said of the level of want for food at one of my distant relatives death at the 59-61 famine: a devote Buddhist and vegetarian, was so wrecked by hunger that his last lucid comments to people around him was wanting a couple of left over fatback bits after the lard had been extracted. His relatives not wanting to upset him took some cotton, burnt it a little and faked it so he would die a vegetarian.

I owe what I have to my parents, and really, my hardship in china and us is nothing in comparison to what they had to over come.

http://youtu.be/EtAmzKvyJCE the simple difference between the rich and the poor

I think some of you guys are still missing the point. Yes, poverty and wealth are relative and we should all be greatful for what we have, however, that isn't the issue. Everyone seems to be ignoring the elephant on the room. This isn't about red and blue states, public versus private education, social welfare or black and white versus smart T.V.'s. The issue is the EXTREME wealth, power and influence acquired illegally by a small group of individuals and what that missing $ represents to the rest of us. This is organized crime NOT the American dream

I respect your opinion. I think it's a bit of a stretch though to say that the "haves" are screaming "give me that.." this is easily dismissed except for the most rabidly biased mind.

My sister is a Blue dog dem who screams this same retoric all the time. There are no millions "denied" coverage. I work in the medical field and it's just silly talk. If you look at your states medical programs as well as federal programs there is no cost or low cost health care on the books everywhere. Of course it's also a crime for a hospital to deny emergency service to anyone. If you mean millions who don't have health insurance, that may be true but the used to have a choice. If you have a job usually you have health care or at least can if you choose to prioritize healthcare. Some do, some don't. As for the millions (why is it always millions. No study.. no data.. but automatically retoric must have a big number for small minded people to believe it) who work more than 40 hours a week and don't earn enough, that sucks. I don't know what enough is. I made $10 an hour at my first job, worked 40 hours at 17 and had a car, an apartment and a decent life. Maybe people have made bad choices and why should I pay for them? This is America and the option to go a low route through life is still better than most of the world. Those who work hard and make good decisions, go to school, get a good career should be rewarded. They are paying most of the taxes anyway.. Wish them luck.

You also miss the point but you are right about the rhetoric and yes, I said 'millions' without checking any statistical data in order to make my point. However, I think you'll agree that no amount of hard work will elevate the average person into a position of earning that kind of money. So, forget the 'haves' and the 'have nots' and focus on US(American citizens) and THEM (an international criminal network of money launderers, drug traffickers, shylocks and murderers with influential ties to the highest levels of government and industry). That, is not rhetoric.
