OXFAM: "100 richest people could end world poverty"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wait, are you implying the video and the studies that back it up are portraying the information inaccurately, or are you saying its okay for 1% to have more than the bottom 90% combined?

I am not concerned with other people's wealth.

In any case I agree with Miguel that discussion is pretty much done. This should stay dead.

Fpower, I'm curious what you hope to achieve? Agree or disagree; it just seems like whining if there is not an achievable proposal. I apologize if its in the thread somewhere; I only made it about 5 pages in.

not to discount a study with a random figure... but really they're saying the difference between poverty and prosperity for 6.3 billion people is 60 billion dollars? Less than 10$ per person?

You realize that 10$ isn't even enough to feed a child for a month on one of those feed hungry kids programs right? I'm really not sure how that 10$ is supposed to carry the kid from can't afford even the most basic food to working class...

If it were really all that easy don't you think the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation would have taken care of it by now? Between them and all their donors O'm pretty sure they could scrape together at least half that and save half the world from poverty.

My guess is they're 2 zero's off at least. (ie at least 6 trillion) possibly 3 zero's off.

Good question. I guess my reason for posting was to discuss a relevant topic with people who have relevant opinions. MFK has a diverse community and we all have different perspectives on different issues from fish keeping, to sports, to movies, etc. I've interacted with several people here over the years whose opinions I respect, even when they differ from my own. That's all.
I don't think I'm whining (am I?), I'm simply sharing a video that I thought fit well with the topic of discussion. These statistics indirectly emphasize the issue of class consciousness (or lack thereof), which causes most of us to assign ourselves to a higher class than the one that we're actually in. I guess for this reason perhaps it IS a bit uncomfortable to deal with realities that debase ones own sense of social status.
We all, in one way or another, consent to this class structure. The question is whether it is an informed consent, or not. If not, then your welcome for the info. Share it, discredit it; do with it what you will.

@yogurt, could you explain that a bit more? How did you come to $10? Are you referring to the Oxfam report in the op or the video I just posted?

Heavy dose of wealth envy. Nothing more, nothing less.

Straight up and how is this open again? This should have remained dead.

 I was just curious; mainly after seeing some others posting pics of the French Revolution... I think self-awareness is very important (which seems what you're promoting in your post above); but I don't see feasible change to the current power/money dynamic that we live with today.

I used my own self-awareness to better myself. Realizing I'll never be even close to mega-rich; I started working hard in Highschool, got into a great College, and formed my own career from there. I'll probably never be a millionaire, but I'm better off than where I started; that's for sure. And I think thats a better outlook than wishing the world's elite wealthy will share with me....
