Marble sailfin catfish

ive been looking in to getting a smaller cat (30'') so i found the marble sailfin. but it seems like theres more than one species. ive only found two so far in my books. google helped a little but didint answer my question. witch is the most common sailfin to find in the hobby? my lfs has one not sure witch species it is tho any way to tell them apart?

i think the most common one is leiarius marmoratus but the other species i can think of is leiarius pictus.

Hey Ethan, sorry I missed your question.

Marbled sailfin pim, IME, is most commonly applied to Leiarius pictus.

Marbled pim aka Achara is by far and large the most common in the hobby - Leiarius marmoratus.

L. longibarbis AFAIK (which is very little - this guy is new in taxonomy) looks very close to marmoratus. Please look at the pics and compare - hard to confuse pictus with its distinctive saddle mark with any other http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/genus.php?genus_id=92

There may be other Leiarius in the wild, undescribed or semi-described, but this should not be relevant here.

Thanks thebiggerthebeter the one my lfs has looks like Leiarius marmoratus saying its wild caught there asking $249 the pim is about 12'' do you think thats a fair price?

Not at all. From all my hunting for trade-ins at the LFSs along the east coast, I'd say ~1' acharas are usually tagged at $50-$100. One can also buy a 3"-4" baby for ~$20 and have a 1-footer in 6-8 months. They grow on par or faster than RTCs.

The ID may be wrong too. Can you snap a good pic?
