Females keep the stripes, have a yellow or goldish hue. Do a search for photos to compare.I have not heard of more than 12 inch females

It's going to all depend on your jag. Don't chance it. If u want a parachromis get a loisellei they stay smaller and are known to be less mean. IMO motas are the meanest of the 4.

Jaguar Cichlid - Quick Aquarium Care
•Temperament: Large Aggressive - Predatory
•Aquarium Hardiness: Moderately hardy
•Aquarist Experience Level: Advanced
•Diet Type: Carnivore
•Minimum Tank Size: 125 gal (473 L)
•Temperature: 75.0 to 82.0° F (23.9 to 27.8° C)
•Range ph: 7.0-8.7
•Hardness Range: 10 - 15 dGH

Wouldn't call that a minimum tank size, more like ideal tank size. Minimum is a 75 gallon for life, male or female. Very rarely will you find specimen that actually exceed even 15" in the home aquarium much less reach the record 24". Also, unlike umbee, they are ambush predators and so aren't as active so they don't really need all of that space. Of course, bigger is always better but for a minimum tank size, 75 gallons is pretty much it. That's only for a solo specimen though, no tankmates.
