Geophagus sp. Brasiliensis Uruguay

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Really beautiful fish. Congratulations. How does his temperament compare with common brasiliensis? I find then a bit aggressive. What tank mates do yiu have him with?

Very nice! Love the blue on gold. I have a smaller individual (4.5" - I'm assuming yours is 6-7"?) in a 120 gallon subtropical tank with various Gymnos and some Australheros. He's a great tank mate - very peaceful, apart from normal pushing and shoving when food is around. Even then it's tempered.

Thanks. He is less aggressive than the other kind.
The other fish in the tank are eartheaters.

Thank you.

Looks like one of the Gymnogeophagus of the rhabdotus complex, perhaps meridionalis blue neon (but all look similar) . If so, you won't need a heater, it may, as many Uruguayans do, need a cool down at some point.

What's the difference between a Brasiliensis from Uruguay, and a common Brasiliensis? I've seen one 13" Brasiliensis in a LFS that developed an impressive hump, I guess the uruguay one will also develop a hump at old age.

Gorgeous! I definitely need to make it back to Uruguay and go to the eastern part of the country to collect these guys! Good luck with him!

It would be interesting to know the actual collection point of these guys. Brasiliensis-complex is found pretty widely in southern Brazil and some corners of Uruguay.

We collected some cf. brasiliensis in Laguna Molle near Centurion in Cerro Largo (Eastern Uruguay). It's really the middle of nowhere!

Laguna Molle is really full of Elodea (Anacharis) and really muddy bottom so it's tough to collect.

I brought some little ones back but lost them after last summer's extended power outage... which means that I need to go back...

Matt
