So this is my new syno. Picked it up locally for like $20. It is really old, and grungy looking, but I just thought it looked cool, and wanted to give it a good home. It is about 7.5". Someone brought it in with two others that are smaller. might have to go back for pics of those if they are the same species. This being Montana I'm gonna bet they are nothing rare though. I'm not good at I'ding synos though. I've had pleurops before, and a few others, but they were all easy to id. This one is so ugly I can't really tell lol. The smaller ones were spotted. This one is almost olive drab. they had them in a tank full of baby convicts lol. All with very fat bellies. Now I am having to ween a syno off live!!!

oh yeah forgot to mention the previous owners had it in a 20 L for about 15 years they told the store owner. They purchased it from a pet store that no longer exists at about 1", and said they paid $2. lol

Yes. That's my professional identification lol. Definitely ugly cute though. Any pattern on it at all? It was tough to tell from the video

Pattern is extremely faded, but yes it has smallish black dots all over on a faded olive body. I didn't set up lighting for the vid so my bad lol. Was trying to do several things at once.

the smaller ones did look a lot like nigrita. I think we are on the money there. I don't think it's euptera though. Fins and barbels don't match at all. Funny thing is this is definitely bigger than the max size given for nigrita if that's what it is. I am leaning heavily towards that at this point.

According to planet catfish, it's max size is 6.7". I suppose it's possible that a fish that old could exceed that size. Perfect example is Datnoids. Max size is always 15-18" for Indonesian tigers but I've seen some old 20" + beasts on this forum. I believe with the knowledge you have and the care you give, that Syno will be looking good in no time.

Thanks. This vid is about 5 days old so it is settled in pretty well now and taking sinking pellets some along with whole baby white shrimp. I actually hope to get some new growth out of this old bitty lol. I haven't officially measured it, but it looks rather large next to the wels and the 11.5" vulture catfish. This syno is now my thickest catfish lol.
