Hi, this is my first thread. Actually SH in my life since my teen especially striata (common SH for Malaysian). But now my hobby to collect SH been grow since I've read many thread here. I feel that SH is very interesting species and I can't believe it that so many species out there.

Just wanna share that I've finally bought three pleuros from LFS yesterday. Actually I don't have spare tank too right now but I don't want to lose to have it. It is difficult to find it in LFS here in my place. But luckily they are still young (just 5 to 6cm) and I manage to put them in my plastic tank. I wish to add one more when I set up a new tank for them.

And I want to feed them with worms, is it okay? Actually I've asked the seller yesterday that they feed them with live fish. I just wanna to change their diet to worms for this time while their still small. Today I've tested to feed them with worms but they never touch it, like they're not interested. But then I put a few fish (actually this fish is for my marulioides) and a bit bigger than their mouth, they start to attack it. Just want to seek advise how to change their diet to worms. Anybody have experienced this?

(Sorry for my English :))

How you doing mate, worms are ok to feed. Other things you could try are frozen blood worms at this size small pieces if mussel or prawns and other meaty foods. May take a while but after a few days of no live food they should start to eat.

Thanks mate, i've been thinking that when they are hungry they will eat that worms. And I will also try to feed them with frozen blood worms too.
Today they starting to explore their tank and look more friendly with me (no hiding anymore). Love to see them swimming around. :) Anyway thanks for your advise.

Nice. One of my favorite channa.
Some people advise against blood worms because your fish may refuse other foods. I'd try chopped up prawns first and use blood worms as kind of a last resort (they're not very nutritious either).
No, need to apologize for your english; it's good.

Nice find!

I agree try to get them onto chopped frozen foods first, earth worms are a safe and nutritious source, better then live feeder fish because other fish can carry disease or parasites but i find fish who get a taste for earthworms can become picky toward other food.

Blood worms tend to be readily excepted by many small fish which can lead to picky feeders as bottles mentioned but i've used this to my advantage. I've used them to convert picky feeders off live. I'll offer blood worms, then later i soak chopped prawn in the blood worms and offer the blood soaked shrimp, works like a charm !

In the end at this size I'd if they refuse everything esle for more then a week I'd cave and give them live feeder fish, they will quickly grow a few inches and fatten up, then it's safer to starve them a bit more and convert them off live.

Hope that helps, and good luck!!

Thanks bottles... actually blood worms a bit expensive than prawn here. But it is less work to serve them... LOL. But prawn is a good option and I will try it first. But is it when they growing up they still stick to prawn? I mean did they want to try live fish when they are bigger?

Hello -DC-, I agree with you that live fish could carry disease. But I'm thinking how'd my micro survive with live fish. They didn't want anything else than live fish. And if the fish end up dead in their tank they will let it go. But normally they will eat immediately when I feed them. Nothing left. But I think maybe micro a bit tough SH than others. Perhap. And my marulioides even I've introduce worms later they still could accept it. Also prawn and slice of chicken. :)

So I'll let the babies starving a bit then I'll try to feed them with blood worms. Hopefully they'll accept it. Thanks again pal.

Not all live carries parasites and some fish just wont convert and you have no choice snakeheads arnt one of those fish, most once settled in will eat ANYTHING lol.

I know many who go years feeding live without problems, But trust me i can tell you from first hand experience nothing is worse then growing out a nice fish then a few years down the road loosing it over one bad feeder ! After loosing a nice fish to a stupid mistake like that i realized feeding live is like like playing Russian roulette, might win and get an exciting show, but you never know when that bad one might hit and if it does it can be the end of a single fish or the whole tank stock !

Prawn is fine as a staple for them, My snake heads & all my predator fish are fed shrimp/prawn as the main food source chopped when young, by adult hood they take down without chopping and shells left on. I'll offer pellets, insects and smelt etc as well just to mix up the diet from time to time, but shrimp is the main food source.

DC is right, once they're eating and comfortable you can feed almost anything. I mix up dead and live food (I breed cichlids and crayfish for live foods; no store bought feeders). Mine will even hit algae wafers that I feed to my catfish, but they always spit them out. As soon as they see me open the lid, they'll attack anything that hits the water.
Aside from prawn and shrimp, mine go crazy for dead fish as well. Silversides or fish fillets, etc.
I find a mix of everything is usually best.
