Sharing how I did my syntactic turf grass for my 422 tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that's a darn good idea. no chemicals leach from the plastic, eh? How long has it been in the tank with fish?

@rob1984 how the hell is fake grass going to grow?lol...ps.the sand makes it look good compared to just throwing the grass in by its self

hahahah xD

Looks really nice, do you need a specif brand? as in will any leech anything out into the water? I imagine some would be sprayed with UV resistants and maybe other things?

didnt realize it was fake grass as in canada here we have rolled up lawn that looks identical to that thought thats what i thought it was my bad :)

@rob
yea lol its sod..but the grass you can get all over the place..the good one with the rubber underneath like at golf courses or what i did was call the mobile guys who do house installs and asked for spare left overs if there in my area and i gave um teen bucks for a7x7 square..and most of it is already UV protected by the synthetic material that mimics grass

my bro in law does the grass on golf course's he has lots of it lol :) but would it work if you used real peice of grass off a roll ? like would it grow, or cloud the water ? think it would look really cool if some spots were really tall/thick and short in other areas.... nice hiding spots for some guys and vaccumming im sure wouldnt be no different then sand ?

@rob
I don't think terrestrial grass will grow.it might darken and die, that my friend is a messy cleanup....but there's stuff like tape gras,eelgrass
Echinodorus Lilaeopsus ,Sagittaria Subulata, and S. Subulata it even dwarf swords look identical to grass once they have over taken and carpet the floor.imo i wish it was that simple to just add grass and water and have a kick ass
Tank.hope that made sense lol

yea man i hear you, was just a thought with the real roll out grass is all.... wasnt sure if it would work or not hahaha.... but still none the less would look cool as heck....and to plant swords or real plants into a big tank and wait for it to grow before adding fish would liekly take a long time before it reached a "cool" looking height in spots lol

That's pretty sweet, I've never seen that technique ill have to try it out

Thanks! yeah so far so good for me!

You don't think the fish are gonna pick at it and lift it or eat it ?
What kinda fish are u gonna stock ?

The sand i put in is about 15kgs Should be heavy enough. going to add more driftwoods and stuff to weight it down. i am keeping plecos, baby peacock bass, mountain shrimps, Some dats too All small fishes. its like a grow out tank.

Done that once..came out good after the loose pieces left..but then my sand eventually disappeared..make sure you have rocks down.lol..its a really awesome look to..

Thanks bro. mine has been running around 3months. so far so good.

nope ! the fishes never eat the turf :D

Thank you girlfriend =)

wow dude, it looks pretty good. hows cleaning it?

i don't really touch it just doing my regular water change and cleaning of filter. I do have some fresh water mountain shrimps in my tank as my clean up crew.

whats the point of having the sand on top of the pad of grass ?? also what happens when the grass get super long ? just siccors and cut it off ? would it not die off if it didnt get proper lighting or will it survive with little light ? personally i think that looks awesome especially if you let certian area grow like 6-10" tall and other areas just short... id love to see what it looks like after say 6 months of being in the tank,

i would think cleaning/vaccuming it out would be the same as vacumming a regular sand based tank really just hoover above it to suck up the poop/dirt

LOL! my topic was "syntactic turf" :j/k:

This grass i got it actully more for indoor use. I think with reg water change it should be fine. Ill give you guys more updates on that!

Wannt to do like a "mountain terrain" but since its my first project i kept things simple.

Awesome idea, the sand really does make it alot better than just strait turf
