My xp4 canister filter broke so I came up with a cheaper alternative that sits on top of my 125g.

I used the water pump which I already owned and connected it to a hose that I already owned.
The pump shoots the water through a hole I cut into the water jug I bought at Walmart.
Inside the water jug is all the biomedia, and prefilter I used in the Xp4.

I let gravity push the water back into the tank. But I put a valve at the end of the spout so I can close the filter when I need to service the filter or the tank.

I made somethign similar out of a 5 gallon bucket that already had a hole drilled for a spicket at the base. Using a pump i got for free and a dollar piece of pvc from home depot i made a nice wet/dry. bio balls on bottom, pot scrubies on top. running for three days now, i'll keep ya posted.

Very nice Alden. What broke on the XP4? I may have some parts.

Thanks Brian. I got so frustrated with the XP4 because it kept leaking if I didn't have it on the right way so I sold it to a guy who likes fixing projects. He got it for dirt cheap since I told him it leaked.

Aren't you worried about the glass breaking from the weight of that thing full? Not the tank itself but the glass canopy it looks like you have it on top of.

Looks awesome and easy to set up just curious is all.

I actually only let it fill about half way and then I placed it on the cross bar in the middle of the tank and also the edge of the tank. So the full weight is not solely on the glass.
