Switching to Frontosa from All Male Peacock/Haps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 245 that I want to put a group of blue type fronts in. I would like to add some other tangs too. Anybody have good luck long term with this?

Neutrino - thanks for all the info. I see that you post on another site about Frontosa and you seem knowledgeable. What's the best way to acquire good quality WC or F1 Zaire blue frontosa? I'm primarily interested in Mikula or Moba.

BTW ... That question is for everyone that's bought frontosa. Are there any online retailers that I can trust when buying Frontosa online?

I would not give up my Moba Fronts for anything, I just purchased a used 300 gallon tank and can't wait to upgrade them from the 180. I have multiple tanks of all three lakes so all my needs get met, but when my 12" alpha male eats from my hand that is just awesome he is like a wet pet. To get the true experience of Fronts you need a colony of at least six. Valley Aquatics has some great looking wild caught fronts and Steve is great to deal with. Good Luck

Hate to start making recommendations since it would be easy to slight quality vendors I might leave off the list. IMO the vendors on the cyphotilapia site you referred to should be good and there are other good ones out there. Got my current F1 Kapampa from a private breeder and imo that's another way to go, especially if they can give you some documentation of the source where they got theirs.

It's nice when you can see them for yourselves in person before buying, but that's not always possible, especially to find a particular type, so looking at reviews on cichlid sites or a dedicated cyphotilapia site like cyphos.com can be a good place to start. Moba are fairly easy to find. Mikula not as common and it's more a matter of who has them in at the time or the few private hobbyists who are already breeding them.

I just put an ad on cyphos.com for F1 Mikula or Moba. Hopefully there's someone locally that has some to sell.

i love my WC Mpimbwe colony, i have a 12+ inch alpha male that will greet me at the top of the tank for dinner, theyre like a bunch of water puppies

I picked up about a dozen Fronts 1 1/2 years ago from someone who was just wanting rid of them. They are the more common Burundi variant w/o paperwork, but the price was just too good to pass up. I went there to buy a tank and ended up buying fish also. I don't think that my wife was too happy with me.

Anyway, I also have a 220 mixed Malawi tank. If I had it my way, I would move the fish in my Malawi tank to my 120 and my Fronts to my 220, but my wife dislikes my Fronts because she says, and I quote "They don't do anything, they are boring to watch". I, personally, don't see them that way. They have a majestic personality to them. Their moves are moer subtle.

Thanks! That's what I like to hear. I like my current all-male Peacock/Hap tank, but sometimes get tired of all the fish zooming around like their tails are on fire. :nilly:
