Just Bought a 'Misc Cichlid' - Amphilophus Lyonsi?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats not a Trimac, it's a low grade FH, and NO a female Trimac will house your stock. Fwprawn is way off, Female Trimacs are mean as sin. Mine has killed males bigger than her. Amphilophus are different than Parachromis. A female jag is not a female midas/mac. It's apple and oranges.

The salv is going to be toothy as mentioned prior by several.

Never no people have had a lot worse combos of fish than this, as we all say aggression is down to the individual fish not the species. Your ebjd could turn around and kill this little guy, just keep a eye on all of them.

Very True but an EBJD cost > then a 10.00 fishy =P

My little female EBJD is no pushover! She has quite a bit of 'spunk' for being the smallest cichlid in the tank!

I've just looked at some youtube videos of fully grown female Trimacs, what stunning fish! IF that's what I've got, I'll definitely play it by ear and see if she'll be nice!

Thanks for your input. I have a 2 week period that my LFS will accept returns, so do you think it's worth hanging on to it, or shall I just take it back and swap for something else?
They have some stunning turquoise Sevs in but they are only around 3" and we all know Sevs are soft as s**t, so may not do well.

They did have a nice 6" Tiger Oscar and a 4.5" Texas... Hmmm, I really don't know what to do guys.

The dark spot on the dorsal indicates a strong posability it could be a female.

While I agree that levels of agression vary among individual fish within a species the question is weather or not you are willing to take the risk with your prize fish. Often it seems these killing sprees go on during the night or some other equally inconveient time where you wake up one day or come home to find a fish skinned or dead. Then it's too late. So the decision is up to you.

Chances are it's a FH not Trimac but either way like I sad it's a nice looking fish.

It's not worth the risk man take it from me I had to learn the hard way that any Amphilophus species or flowerhorn can really hurt the average cichlid, my first dempsey of 6-7" had its bottom lip riped clean off by a 5" red dragon flowerhorn, and you have a red dragon flowerhorn... All it takes is the dempsey to flare at it too much, even if your dempsey is no push over, he's not built like a flowerhorn.

Thanks for making my decision that much easier. I'll be taking it back tomorrow and swapping it for the Texas.

Imagine if I was a complete fool and didn't seek your lots advice on here. £1,000+ worth of potentially dead CA/SA Cichlids!!!

Just got back in and the FH/Trimac is hiding at the top of the tank in some wood. Looks like she's took a bit of a beating which I can only assume is from my Gold Saum. He keeps going to attack her but then my True Parrot chases the Saum away. It amazes me how a little 4" odd fish can be fine with 10"+ fish but the little 4" odd Saum is causing issues.

Going to keep an eye on the tank tonight and then separate if needed.

Adding any new cichlid to an already established cichlid hierarchy can be problematic for the new fish. Below is a pair of true trimacs.
While your EBJD may be spunky, it is really not built to deal with a true trimac, or trimac based hybrid (your new fish)

You may have trouble adding any new cichlid to your tank.
