My Friend gave me this guy yesterday because it was his last fish and he wanted to take his tank down. Its almost 5.5" and he said hes had it for 10yrs. Ive never kept these guys but im reading they should be in groups. He was in a 20gal tank all by himself hiding under a decoration but now in my tank hes all over the place and i havent seen him hide once. So i guess my question is - do i really need to add 2 more or is it not a big deal because hes used to being alone? and if i did would the chances of fighting be higher since hes never been with other CLs?

It would be fun for you to see them schooling around and all their antics but I wouldn't say it would be necessary to add more if he seems happy.

Thanks everyone. He's def a cool fish and not shy at all. He seems to have no fear of any of my fish, which are peaceful but bigger, and he tries to sit on top of my catfish lol. Although it would be cool to see a group I think I'll just stick with this one since he seems to be enjoying himself the way things are.

They are 100% fearless in my experience. If it's out swimming around it's comfortable, and I don't think it matters if you add more or not. It is fun to see them school though. I keep mine with some large CA/SA cichlids and they not only go out in the open at but they will taunt them on occassion. They are lightning quick and generally are not messed with unless the fish can swallow them whole (and even then they are left alone in my experience).

They are, by nature, a social and active fish. They are always looking to be near another fish. It could turn out to be a problem if he starts pecking at the other fish to play. I would pick up at least another 2, even if really small, just to keep him occupied with his own kind.

when i had tire barbs and clown loaches they use to school togther, i guess it's cause they have similar patterned stripes
