My favorite instructor in college was a former rocket scientist for NASA who left to get his PhD in cybertronics. Some of the things he was working on was absolutely fascinating including using what is essentially a webcam to help someone who lost his vision in an accident regain about 5% of his sight. That may not sound like much but when you go from normal sight to absolutely blackness any little thing is a miracle. This was about 7 years ago too so who knows where they're at now, but even back then he was able to recognize basic block shapes and distinguish light from dark and see walls and other objects in his way when walking. They were also working on using solid state memory to help people who lost their ability to store new memories. Once again this was for accident victims only though.
I just read a article in pop sci about bionic retinal implants already in clinical trial stages. Its interesting that they feel the need for technological evolution when we still don't know what we are completely capable of. Stan Lee had a show called super human and they had a teenager on there who played basketball could skateboard and ride a bike. He was born blind I believe but he taught himself to see by using echo location.
