Armatus 16"+ 8x2x2 Powerhead Advice.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well i have a pond pump with a sponge in it that pumps 2200 gph. When i added it to the tank for a test run last week it really seemed that it was spinning the water around very fast and a big clown knife could not handle it. I can try this tonight again though with Armatus. Does anybody know of 1 pump powerhead sponge filter that will do it all that rates 2000gph. I love those RIO 2500 pumps with sponge setup. I ordered a SEI 1500 gph for my sump. So when water is spinning around very fast he can swim to a dead spot in the middle?

But if you feel it needs more current i can try that pump again. I want the absolute best for this guy while i get my bigger tank ready. I read that length is also very important and i see why, he loves to stretch his fins. I am happy after 1 day he seems very aware of the tank and is not running up the glass like he did the first day. A true predator really looking good in his tank!

He just ate 2 giant frozen silver sides! that made my day! He seems to be very happy, occasional he will rub on the side of the tank looking at his reflection. I try and add towels but there is still a reflection that i can see.

Good to hear. The rubbing on the glass may never stop, as long as its not aggressive it wont cause any damage or "nose rub". Mine does it for a few min once the tank lights shut off then he goes about cruising the tank.

If he's already accepting frozen silversides thats awesome, most armatus are super stubborn to train. You should try gut loading the silversides with carnivore pellets, it will help give them additional nutrients that arent found in fish fillets.

Yes i was so happy he ate. The guy who had him though said he has been off Live feeder and eats fish fillets and shrimp. I am gonna try earthworms tomorrow, i have a colony i keep for my BGK and an hoping he goes for them also! The nose rubbing does not seem aggressive its when he gets stressed i see him doing it, but not bashing just touching glass. I will be trying more power head 2200 gph tomorrow and if its too much i might just add another RIo 2500. I like the way they become mechanical also and i like to add some purigen to one of them. Stuffingf the silversides with the pellets is awesome, might try stuffing them with earthworms and gut loaded mealworms!

Nice to hear from you guys i really appreciate it, i am getting an awesome phone this weekend just to take pics and video of my Armatus!

My Armatus ate Freeze Dried Krill today! He is so bold and cool and cruises around tank. There was some uneaten silverside I had to get out of the tank and had to go in with hose to get it out. He just hung out in his spot and did not move a muscle!

Any advice on cleaning the aquarium and not spooking him?

Not really no lol mine doesnt care if I put the syphon or my hand right next to him. Just do your thing, eventually your fish will learn the routine.

Sounds like your off to a much better start than most of us Armatus keepers.

Sounds like this guy is coming along very well for you! :D :nilly:

Thanks so much guys good to hear from you!!!
Well i feel very lucky and very proud this is really my dream fish. The guy i got my Armatus from said he had the fish already trained to eat Tilapia strips and market shrimp. He seems cool with my hands in the tank so happy about him not being skittish at all so far. he even acts bold and not nervous. I had a school of red tails a few years back and every month one of them would try and jump or go crazy for no reason and get bashed up. I was thinking of adding another Armatus but i don't want them chasing each other like that.

Also I just added a SEIO 1500 gph powerhead to the setup so 2 RIO 2500 and SEIO M1500, Water is spinning around nice now. Looks like that is enough, actually he does not swim against these power heads like i thought he was gonna do. he has been hanging more towards the dead spots.

My Goliath does the same thing, but he gets obviously distressed if there's not as much current.
