GLOW FISH-Ban or no ban?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think they are cool. Better than.hybrids! I agree that our crops and meat animals have been genetically modified. Some good some bad. Heck even high fructose corn syrup is modified. Just ban the glow fish in there native country.

Hate to tell you, their native country is the US. The Glofish sold in the US were created in a lab in Texas. They were created to be used as pollution level indicators. The company began selling them in the pet industry to increase research revenue.

I mean the country the species is indigenous to. ie south America ... ;)

No ban! I agree that they attract a lot of new (and young) fish keepers, which I think is great for the hobby.

Not quite true Oddball. They were actually "created" at a Uni in Singapore. The company you refer to (Yorktown technologies) were just smart enough to realize the potential in the tropical fish industry,& secured the world wide rights to market & sell them.

You can't selectively breed cows to glow....
So you don't have any ideas what is inside of your foods that you brought from the supermarkets?

I think that anything that increases younger people into the hobby should not be banned. I personally don't buy the glowing fish, as I assume most of the folks that are on this site wouldn't either. But for a first tank, new to the hobby, that might be enough to draw somebody into the hobby.

If you don't like, then don't buy them.

If you are right in the long run they will stop making them if they don't sell. Companies are out to make a profit, if folks don't buy what they are selling, they will have to sell something else. No need for a government to interfere in free markets.

Im against banning them just because of the revenue they bring to our store. A little kid comes in with his/her family and spends $30 on five glo-fish. It gets someone into the hobby and helps us pay for rent:naughty:
