GLOW FISH-Ban or no ban?

Altered genetics controllled by man.... it's funny how sometimes it's ok and other times it isn't.
Domestic dog breeds - all of them man created over the years based on selective mating to amplify certain traits.
FW Stingray hybrids - people pay more for cool patterns that aren't found in the wild because people are putting different genetics together.
Glofish - man altered genetics to sell more fish to a wilder market.

I don't have anything against glo fish, they are just a different color, pretty much every other popular species has been bred for specific colors or fins... They also seem to be popular among first fish keepers, my mom wants a glo fish tank for her birthday...

So you don't have any ideas what is inside of your foods that you brought from the supermarkets?

anyone who says they do is a lier or ignorant.

And the question was posed from a canadian member... glo-fish are indeed from the us.. and I am personally against genetic modification as a whole.. to say it's "Ok" to do it to our pets would just make me a lier. they are legal in the US. I don't buy them.. if you want to.. whatever floats your boat... do I "understand" why some countries ban them? makes perfect sense to me... They have 0 tolerance for genetically modified animals.

As a buyer for an aquatic store in Canada this subject is a gigantic outbreak of ICK to me.These fish ( the lumenescent gene found in jellyfish was successfuly introduced) are much loved by kids but probably scorned on by many. Banned in Canada,Europe,& many other countries, they are legal in the USA.
Most of the mass produced crops (wheat, potatoes, soybean, tomato etc) have undergone genetic manipulation,& I have the option to buy them or not,but with glow fish which are not meant for human consumption I don`t have a choice.
I can order jellybean parrots, even have them with the logo of my football or hockey team tattooed in them, but not glow fish.
A bitter irony is also that the only state to ban them in the USA is governed by a guy who used every substance known to man to enhance his appearance, namely California.
In a billion $ industry there should be a unilateral agreement such as they do with CITES for endangered spieces.
I say no ban!!

I say ban, let's tattoo the name of my favorite team on your kids face and see how he goes with that....

The US FDA's position on Glofish: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/FDAVeterinarianNewsletter/ucm106233.htm

FDA Statement Regarding Glofish
FDA Veterinarian Newsletter November/December 2003 Volume XVIII, No 6

There has been much media attention recently about the marketing of "Glofish." On December 9, 2003, FDA issued the following statement:

Because tropical aquarium fish are not used for food purposes, they pose no threat to the food supply. There is no evidence that these genetically engineered zebra danio fish pose any more threat to the environment than their unmodified counterparts which have long been widely sold in the United States. In the absence of a clear risk to the public health, the FDA finds no reason to regulate these particular fish.

Lots of other good resources and references in here: http://www.glofish.com/classroom/Biotech Animals.pdf

My take is that there is no need to regulate or ban glofish. Lots and lots and lots of ornamental fish are different than what is found in nature.

Originally, fluorescent zebrafish were produced to help find pollutants in water. The idea was that non-fluorescing fish would indicate the water was safe, whereas a fluorescing fish would indicate danger (i.e., water pollution).

Don't release them into the wild...like any other aquarium fish.
