How To Grow A Large Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I doubt lighting will affect growth.

As for the lifespan, 10 years for a Jag isn't that long. 15-20 years is more like the expected lifespan.

OK, now I want to know, who's got the oldest jag?

While we're at it, let's talk about something else. Will lighting have an effect on growth? I use 8 four foot t5's currently. It is a lot of light now that the tank is more bare, it was a lot less with all the plants.

I do t think it will affect growth as long as it isn't stressing him out. Too much light can stress them and that will inhibit his growth. If he starts acting skittish maybe turn 4 bulbs off and see if that helps.

I believe Mel had a male live to around 20 yearsish. I believe the father of his current dovii lived 17 years. Aquamojo's male jag Jumbo lived to be over 13.

It's rare to see people raise fish this long. 10 years IMO is a solid lifespan compared to most fish we see on here.

I had no idea they had that potential for longevity. I thought twelve or so was tops.

I'm trying to get good pics, but he's so active, he just won't be bloody still. Even though these two are a little blurry, they show a better representation of his color and nuchal hump. I'll keep trying for better pics.

I'll also add that I tried to call Jeff Rapps today for a female. No answer, but I left a voicemail. I'm going to need a large female, I'd think at least five inches or so. His list was updated today with: "Parachromis dovii (from a couple different localities) wild juveniles and very limited adults arriving 3/1". I've been thinking about two females. I'll update when I know more...

Great looking Dovii! He has some real nice blues (even with the blurriness). I had a 7 inch female that I traded away about 4 months ago, unfortunately ..... she would have liked your male...... I look forward to following his growth. Please keep this thread going.

Thanks, he's getting better looking every day. It's been a week since I changed the tank around. I'm sure in another couple of weeks he'll be back to normal. Wish I could have had that big female!

Looks like a nice Dovii. Lots of growing to do.

Thanks, he is really nice. Ken Davis always had good stock! I wish he was still doing it, he is a lot closer to me than Jeff Rapps, shipping was a ton cheaper. He's nowhere near as big as Mel's, but he's definitely on his way to being a real monster!
