hello new to this monster fish keeping but so excited. i have a 180 with 4 oscars, 4 parrots, two fresh water dragons, six catfish, two bali sharks and two africans beautiful colors. the other day one of my parrots that is totally yellow started to turn black from the top down. i originally thought that she was probably died from the store that i received her from to make her more appealing and i was willing to accept her in black, she would still be nice looking. then around three days later i have woken up to find suddenly the three or four day process of her turning mostly black had instantly reversed and she is all yellow again! what was it , how did this happen and other things came to mind and i figured i would ask the monster fish club for information because im sure someone out there has witnessed such a thing and mite have info for me. next i have to say that the temps ph and ammonia are all perfect, that has never been an issue because i check it sometimes two to three times a week due to the number of fish. next there wan no signs of distress at all from the fish? im simply curious of what went on and if it will happen again or a fluke. thanks
matt

Could have been from stress. Are any of the tank mates picking on it at all? I know fish will change colors due to stress.

Welcome to MFK! It's good to see you're so excited about the hobby. What you saw in your Blood Parrot was refered to as peeling, which will cause the fish to change colors or patterns very quickly sometimes over night but usually over the course of a few days. The Blood Parrot is a hybrid, a combination of species. This is a man made fish that occers no where in nature. One of the species used in the creation of this fish is an Amphilophus it is very common for these fish go through a peeling process as they grow and many times the adult looks nothing like the juvinal. What you saw happening is totaly normal and nothing to worry about.

Again welcome to MFK and keep up with your water changes!

If you're interested in more information about these fish you could look or ask questions by posting in the Hybrid forum

i got 2 blood parrots and never had somthing like this,i might just missed the peeling stage
BTW is it like caused from adolescense???

It's a very common occurance but doesn't happen to every fish. Most I've seen peeled but like I said some do some don't.

awesome everyone thanks a lot for the info. the one that was peeling was in fact the youngest one under three inches. i never witnessed any of the others do it but they are all older when i purchased them and i got them from a different source. once again thank you and i'm glad to be a part of this site for the simple fact there are people with the same fish and so much knowledge then me. i have to admit as well that every time i did a Google search on any of the issues my fish may be having, all the info always lead me back to MFK. i really am addicted now tho ever sense i completed my tank (i think) have bee testing temp every morning and all levels once a week
