Just would like to ask if anyone here has had experience with using small amounts of crushed coral (in its primary role as a pH buffer) in Festae setups, specifically in setups where the intention is to breed them? I have been using crushed coral in my filters in all my tanks since about 2006 as a pH buffer, to keep pH relatively constant and prevent fluctuation, with fish like bichirs and datnoids and all manner of cichlids. But I have never kept festae before (may be getting some F0 specimens next week), and knowing they are from rainforest habitats in Peru and Ecuador I thought I should ask. Essentially, what I'd like to know is, would crushed coral hinder my efforts to breed them? Would it increase hardness to an extent that festae will not spawn?

Thanks in advance for any input. :)

Really don't think you need to worry about that for festaes. Even though you claim they are wild they should be able to handle straight tap water just fine.

I was told by reliable sources that its been years that anything wild has come out of Ecuador. Where are yours coming from?

It's not me claiming they are wild...it's my LFS. They're getting them in next week and haven't provided me many details yet. I don't have any locality info.

Thanks anyway...

I had some Festae years ago that breed constantly and grew massive in a tank full of Coral sand. :)
