Does it matter which direction the check valve is on a diy pvc overflow?

You have an air check valve - I think you need a water check valve - if you are doing this as part of a "pvc overflow"

What are you trying to make and/or do here ?

If not, are you trying to check the return to prevent the siphon in case of a power outage?

We're having a hard time understanding how an air check valve plays into an overflow.

I'd this on a canister? No need for check on a closed system.

If its for a sump return no need either really. Just drill a small hole in the pipe just below water level in the tank (Siphon break)

lol oops....guess if I could read. kinda like using an aqua lifter pump on a CPR overflow.

that drawing really helped, after i build it i will post a pic just to double check.
i was wondering though, do i need to connect the check valve or whatever its called to an air pump or could i use it on the tank without one?
it's for a 55 gallon tank and i was hoping i wouldnt have to .

would two 1" overflow be overkill? i know that when a pump's gallon per hour rate is higher than the overflow's, there will be flooding but what would happen if the overflow's rate of flow is too much? is this possible?
