The LFS misspelled it, it is "Sábalo", not "Sábado". Sábalo is a SA name for Tarpon, so it is a "Tarpon Barracuda", not a "Saturday Barracuda".
Now ''Sabalo'' makes a lot more sense. A Tarpon/Barracuda is a great description of a Brycon.
Anyone ever heard of a "Sabado Barracuda?"

I've been looking at pics, and I'm nearly positive that the fish I saw was a Brycon Cephalus. I've been trying to farm info, but I'm curious if anyone here has kept this particular species? I've read max sizes ranging from 9" to 18". Below is a pic of the species I'm looking at:
After more searching, it looks like it could also be a Brycon Hilarii..... I wish that was useful info, but I can't seem to find much on these guys. I just want to know how they behave around similarly sized fish.
I think so too. I'm waiting for a vendor to have tarpon and armatus at the same time to save on shipping.

The thing with brycons is their pattern change. I bought some with the same name sabalo barracuda a few years ago and they turned out to be brycon melanopterus. They had red and black tails just like that pic when I first got them and as they grew they lost all the red.... heres a pic of my last one at 14-15in when I lost him:

Well, if they are indeed fast-growing, aggressive fish that dislike other silvery fish, then I suppose the only "safe" tank I have for a tarpon would be my 120. Even in the 120 though, it might be risky given how (relatively) docile the current residents are. It would be neat to pick up though. I seem to have caught the Characin bug from a certain tiger fish obsessed mod who shall remain nameless.
I don't usually need much encouragement to buy a new fish Max... usually the the opposite is best
Anyone ever kept a tarpon? Any likely conflict with a scomb, clown knife, or poly? The tarp in question looks to be between 6-8", so it would be similarly sized to the other fish in the tank.
I've kept tarpon. Awesome fish with tons of personality that never bothered anything else. It ate anything that would fit in its mouth though. It was a swimming chrome garbage can.
They're the same thing.
There are two kinds of tarpon: Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) and Indo-Pacific tarpon (Megalops cyprinoides). The Atlantic gets bigger and has a larger mouth and smaller eye than the Indopac. Both types of fish can be found in anything from full SW to full FW. SW fish grow larger than FW tarpon. SW fish tend to feed on shoaling baitfish such as mullet and herring and FW fish tend to focus on crustaceans like shrimp.
