I've heard of folks using the little green army men in a wet/dry set up. Anything you put in there bacteria will grow on. I have pot scrubbies in most of my HOBs.

Side not I was eating pistachios and was wondering if you could use the shells as a bio homes. I would have to test the water make sure they don't leach anything.

Theys probly have salt/pepper on them...

I'm not sure how the shells could be inert. The shells are biological material so they will likely rot and release chemicals. I'd pass on things like this.
 
I have used pot scrubbers in canister filters many times.
 
That's not the only concern with breather bags. Aside from flow, there's no real way to get food to the sand BB since the bags pass dissolved gases but, nothing that can be metabolized from nutrients.
