But before i get into that, How does everyone like the Jacks?! I work at my LFS and every now and then people bring fish in that they can no longer care for and just a week and a half ago one of the other guys who works there brought in the female dempsey for me because she was outgrowing his tank. Then just few days ago, a guy came into the store with the massive male dempsey and i snagged him before anyone else could. Apparently the male is about 2.5 years old and is a solid 10 or 11 inches. the female is around 2 years and no bigger than 7 inches. Both of them are still settling down but theyve started feeding and everything seems good. They're in a 75 gallon tank with a small group of silver dollar tetras. I'm actually curious if i need a divider for the Jacks though, because the male dempsey basically immediately started digging bit pits and showing off to the female...sometimes the female is right there with him following him around and nudging her body against his...other times though the male nips at her and chases her all over the tank until shes hiding by one of the filters...but then 15 mins later theyre guarding one of the pits together...do i need a divider or will they settle things on their own...sure seems like theyre gonna breed soon or something.
Let me know what you think!

I agree! I'm having a bit of trouble with this guy since his previous owner fed him live fish as a huge part of it's diet unfortunately so Im trying to switch him over to pellets and frozen foods, I've only been able to get him to accept hikari carnivore pellets and bloodworms. Hopefully as more time goes by he'll get used to not eating fish and ill be able to bulk him up a bit

He's a stud! 10-11" is pretty damn big. Other than his nose being a li'l funny he's beautiful. She is gorgeous as well. Excellent specimens for breeding stock if that's what you want. Personally I wouldn't separate them. No real reason to unless she's getting beat up bad. Sounds like they're flirting to me. :)

She's stunning, as others have said I wouldn't separate them it's all part of there mating. As for feeding try some lance fish and mussels, that's what mine eat.

Sweet I was actually going to pick up some mussels and shrimp today and see if that does the trick! I'm not really sure what's up with his nose being a little funny because I noticed that too... Not sure why it's like that, and I'm usually very particular about wanting my fish to look as close to perfect as possible but even though his nose looks a bit different than the typical dempsey, I just find him to be so cool looking! Can't wait for them to start breeding I've already got all kinds of things set up for raising and growing out fry 👍

Very nice pair and pickup! From your picture it is tough to tell that they are the size you claim them to be. Im not doubting your measurement its just tough to tell from angle picture was taken. I recommend placing slate and even clay pot in your tank.... also I highly recommend conditioning your pair by feeding higher protien food's.

I love stories like this. They'll have handsome youngsters. This thread is relevant: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?469769-Rate-the-Jack-Dempsey-above-you

This is a great supplement to your JDs' diet. I've almost lost fingers feeding it to mine: http://www.kensfish.com/moreinfo/freeze-dried-krill-superba.html

I had a big midas cichlid a little whole back that I bought as an adult from a guy who fed him kensfish pellets so I ordered a big pack of it for the midas, I'm sure the kensfish krill are fantastic, but do you or anyone else use their floating pellets? Are they as good/better than something like hikari, omega 1 or NLS?
