What's the best native fish to keep in a 210?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Large shiners like common and Golden shiners are good dithers for the native aquarium; and stonecats, large madtoms and Bullheads are also good pets.

One of the most interesting setups i ever saw was a group of pumpkinseeds in a well planted and landscaped 210.

Nice tank Gunther
That's pretty much the way i see my tank turning out.
I've got my two Leo stingrays in the 210 now. I'm just waiting to finish they're 560 so I've got a little time
I'm just trying to figure out what fish go good together and won't get too big.

Does anyone with native fish, heat they're tanks?
Whats good temp?

Bowfin!!!! they are sweet!

Room temp is the preferred HIGH range for most species. Some will tolerate warmer, but most simply tolerate it and adding a heater will only stress most species. Really just think of setting up a basic, low-tech system. If it is a luxury item, your natives dont need it. Golden shiners get to a good size and can make an impressive dither school to add color and movement. *Good suggestion warmouth*

IME, Many panfish will take territories. Dominant fish can be quite aggressive to the subordinate fish. Simply breaking up lines of sight and "sectioning" off parts of the tank with careful landscaping can cut down or eliminate aggression. Once a dominate fish is established, his territory is the important one. The others will play nice in a school, usually to avoid the aggressive dominate. Fascinating social dynamics and behavior

Thanks Shenanigans, the value of dithers like shiners in a aggressive of semi-aggressive fish tanks I think are often overlooked; large shiners in the "luxilus" genus like Common, Striped, Warpaint and Bleeding shiners work well with medium sized sunfish (Dollar, Spotted, Longear), and Golden Shiners, Fallfish and Creek Chubs work well with Large Sunfish (Green, Bluegill, Redbreast, Pumpkinseed) if theyre in a big enough aquarium. Some of the big Topminnows also work well with medium sized sunnies like the Northern Studfish and Seminole Killifish. Great suggestion on the sectioning off lines of sight for Sunnies, Tough plants and Driftwood help a lot; if Id known about that back when I had my Green sunfish tank it would have saved a lot of fish!
