Only once...I'm so used to them that I'm one of those people who goes outside and looks around when I hear the sirens go off. I've had three small towns near me completely destroyed by them on seperate occasions but have never suffered from much damage myself, although I was doing cable work and had to help re-wire an entire section of town that was hit pretty hard a few years ago. In fact that particular storm hit a medium sized city, tore through about half a mile, jumped over a mile, then tore another path through a different part of town.
