Sorry I haven't updated in awhile. After taking a break and searching around I think I've finally found the artist I need. He worked at a lfs for several years, has a small aquarium, and has a fish themed sleeve. He knew exactly what fish I was talking about and seems as excited as I am. So far this is a much better experience than dealing with the last artist, much more laid back.

After giving it some thought and talking with the artist I realized I was overthinking my tattoo design and that I'm just going to go with a portrait style full color tattoo with a very simple shadow background so the main focus will be the fish. I dropped off my original design to show the size, basic shape, and pose I wanted for the fish. Thanks for everyones input and advice, you have all been very helpful. Now I'm just waiting on a sketch and if I like it it'll finally be done and I'll post a pic of the results.

Technically if it were facing towards your spine it would be a backwards tattoo. Anything with a face on your ribcage is typically done facing out. It's kinda like doing an arm tattoo upside down.
