Just wondering what monsters are illegal to keep and import without your exotics license?
I know RTC's are legal here, and obviously all Australian Natives bar a few close to extinction. I am wanting to build my own 1000 gallon plywood aquarium that will be my monster home. I am not 100% on what I want to stock it with yet until I find out whats legal. I would really love a Hydrolocus armatus, the Goliath African tiger and Black Arowana. I am almost certain the Tiger would be illegal, just not too sure. I've done a bit of research and have really come up with nothing.
A list or a link of all the illegal ''monster'' fish we love to keep. Preferably for Queensland Australia.
Thanks

It says that african tiger fish are "Species listed as noxious under Schedule 5 of the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 and prohibited to be imported into the State."
also says you can't keep Tilapia in Queensland

What's the going rate for a smal RTC?...The prices fore aquarium fish seems to be really high there, from what I have heard.

Common misconception, Australian dollars are almost the same conversion as canadian and US dollars right now, but in general Australians receive a much higher average and minimum wage. To compensate things seem more "expensive" but when compared to prices in say british pounds they come up the same if not cheaper.

A Guy bought a Senegal bichir for $500 you're point is invalid. actually i've read that its because of its strict importation laws its hard and expensive to import tthe fish.

So sad it'll be hard for you to get monster dFish when you can home them... I'd just say go to every lfs and find something cool if not you're pool outta luck unless you find some kind of breeder.

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)

What the hell are you even saying? My point isn't invalid in the slightest, their economy gives people more money therefore on average things cost more to match the higher minimum pay. that is FACT. its not an argument and it certainly isn't invalid.

Yes australians will find it harder to get hold of some species we take for granted because of strict importation laws but do you realise how many australian species are banned from being exported that are truly amazing that you will never get to own, that they can get for cheap ? you are grasping one end of the stick and completely ignoring the other side. Australia has some awesome monster natives that are only available to australians

Even some of our natives are still expensive, I think its just the nature of the industry. With the level of demand not as great percentage wise as compared to other places, prices are higher. I know here in WA, LFS's have a hard time competing with online stores and chain stores since there aren't very many and we've had a number of great ones close down. For example, our jardinis are $150-$180 at the moment for 7-10 cm and from what I've seen, guys in the States are able to get them cheaper. That's despite jardinis being available up north here in WA. But your argument about higher minimum pay and price scaling would also be a variable in the higher pricing. Not to mention stricter import laws would also contribute. In general, a combination of all these factors don't reflect favourably on price and it sucks, its harder for people to get into the hobby because of the costs involved in setting up an aquarium.

Jardini's here cost nearly 300 dollars. so you are getting a great deal to me, Its just California where everything is super cheap

YES, there are some amazing species to be had here. But the exotics are REALLY expensive. I've only seen one RTC in a 200km radius of me and he was going for $1000 at 8 inches on consignment. It was ridiculous. And yes Mattehx and Rafini are right, we have awesome fish, but they are expensive as hell. My jack set me back $145 at 1 inch alone. But I haven't seen a Jack for sale under 25cm in Queensland for a year and a half so I was happy. But yes, Jardini's are really overpriced, and it's funny, it seems to be Leichardti's are rarer than Jardini's in other countries, were as here they go for $90 for a juvenile.
