Brand new to this site! Need to know about doviis

Hello everyone! I'm brand new here, iv been apart of other forums and well they all sucked! and just buy looking around, this site looks amazing! really exited to get your guys imput!
Anyways, i have a 120 gallon tank, its 4x2x2 I really want a dovii, and maybe some smaller chiclids as well, but all I want to know is how long can i have him in this tank,

Not long.. Really a Dovii needs a LARGE LARGE tank and chances are they dont tolerate any roomates. If it was a longer tank you could probably be ok for anywhere from 4 to 8 months maybe a year. Then your going to need larger acomadatiosn. By a long ways.

First off, welcome to Mfk!!! Well to tell you the truth there is so much info to discuss on this topic. I can give you a few pointers but IMO you might find better answers if you utilize the search engine here from my expirience, you will only be able to keep tankmates during growout stages 1"-6" then good luck as dovii do need lots of space and will kill anything that won't breed and sometimes they will kill their female. So if you truly want dovii then yes start with a 6',8' or even bigger tank and buy a group of dovii and grow them out, selecting your keeper and with keep solo or as a pair. Only then will you be able to enjoy your dovii

In nature, dovii eat other cichlids for a living, most notably Neetroplus nematopus and any other juvie cichlids they can swallow. They sometimes have a tolerance for nicaraguense though, and you might get away with it in a 240, but any smaller tank, probably not. It would work for a while with other cichlids, but soon the dovii will grow big enough to swallow nearly all others, and if it can't, it will probably kill them for territorial dominance.

alright you guys thanks for the info! i really want to have a large tank with a selection of chiclids, iv fallen for the doviis and jaguars and I'm starting to think no matter how big the tank they will end up killing each other, ( dovii killing the jag) any one have any luck with small faster chiclids living with there large dovii?

I have been somewhat successful in keeping other fish in with my dovii, but I would say my situation is more of an exception rather than any rule. I think its just pure luck or its just that my dovii hasn't decided to kill whatever was in there with him. It just depends on the individual dovii, but I wouldn't recommend putting anything you want to keep long term or undamaged in there. Good luck.
