ordering my 6x2x2 (180 US gallon) set up...some help with stocking!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am leaning towards a black belt cichlid, from what I am reading they are very tough! and should be capable of hanging with the big boys?...would like to hear from any keepers on what they are like to keep....

I had a 5 inch BBelt was always picking fights.maybe a grammode, freddie, zonotus, bifa.your group is full grown now? If so, maybe 3 SD.

If you do put all these fish together I would put any real decorations. I've noticed with big aggressive fish if there is nothing they can claim as there own then they should be more chill

yeah its a shame they are not quite tough enough, as I do love the GT`s

So true, I have tried this with many fish and in every out come the GT gets killed...

I could see a jag work more then a hornet. I dont know... my hornet would not work with any fish in a 6x2 else the fish is 2-3 times his size, so I will be keen to see if it can be done. My boss from work had a 8x4x2 with 6 hornets in it everything was fine until they hit 10-12", 4 made it and were placed in a 20x5x5 tank main display and they still bashed one another 2 were left in the end now they seem to have setteled down but still will chase after the midas and other cichlids if they get too close. So be careful when he gets to a decent size!

why not get some type of vieja? most can stand there own and aren't overly crazy + they can have some sweet color.

thanks all, my butti is actually very peaceful so far....he is around 8-9in and the midas/devil`s are around the same size, so far my newest midas is the boss, even though he is maybe a touch smaller than my original devil/midas, no one has ever bothered the butti other than my venezualan pike and the butti always gives way to him, maybe I should just keep the pike the butti and the two midas/devils and see how it goes....I do like the vieja complex....but have always read they are not quite tough enough to hang with the big boys long term (apart from black belts and argentea) my favorites are synspillum and black belts....I will be keeping my 5ft set up so if anything goes terribly wrong I do have that set up to fall back on for removing fish etc.

Personally, I would go with a Red Texas, or maybe a Dovii? Both very beautiful, lots of personality, and both can hold their own.
