My 180 Gallon Mangrove Jack aquarium build!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the support guys!! The Jack has Gill Fluke at the moment, he is wild caught so theres no doubt where he got it. He lives in brackish so I think the salt has been keeping parasite numbers low but I think their eggs keep hatching and reinfesting. He is fine at the moment, eating normally, colours fine, no clamped fins, looks like a normal healthy fish apart from the patches of scratching, flashing and twitching, which is obviously the flukes disturbing him. Treating the tank with Praziquantal tabs hopefully I kill all the parasites off!!

UPDATE! Jacks doing a heap better. Doing the last Fluke treatment Sunday. Had to remove one piece of driftwood as my friend gave it too me telling my it had been soaked. But it hadn't and it started to rot in my tank, and I had a REALLY bad tannin problem but a few water changes seemed to have cleared about 70% of it up. Hoping to get some Seachem Purigen to add to my filter today or tomorrow. He's definitely getting bigger! Was wanting to upload a video of him but you can't seem to unless it's on youtube.

Yes, they are my favourite fish. I live in Australia so when I was a kid I caught heaps of huge ones from the river across from me. It's what started my love for these fish. Still haven't gotten Purigen yet as it's $50 for 250 grams at my LFS. Overpriced, but if it works as well as everyone says it does i've gotta buy it.!!
And YES, definitely watch your hands, have a friend with one thats pushing 3 feet and it broke 3 of his fingers and cut him open something bad. :nilly:

Nice setup and good luck with your new addition. Definitely one of the most intelligent fish I have kept to date. Just a heads up though. I wouldn't be telling the world about it being wild caught if it is in fact so. Jacks under 35cm have to be from commercially bred stock as they are governed by size and take limits for both tidal and non-tidal waters here in QLD.;)

Yeah I know the limit is 35cm, but my LFS I got it from said they had been freighted down from a guy in NT. He goes out braving the crocodiles and bullsharks in the night trying to catch them in knee deep water. I'm pretty sure it's all legal. It's one of the biggest pet store chains in OZ, Or they wouldn't have sold it too me in the first place. And yes, extremely intelligent. It's awesome watching him, I do it for hours. especially feeding time.
Oh and I LOVE your jack, been following all your threads about im even before I was an MFK member. You take amazing shots and you Jack has to be one of my favourite on MFK. And any handy info on them would be great!!

No probs. :) I am always amazed how the NT has no size limits on many of their fish. We would have no fish in QLD at all if we adopted that sort of control. Anyway, as long as you can show you purchased it from the store, you'll be sweet. Hope it heals for you real quick too.

Thanks mate!! Yeah here in QLD fish numbers are dropping quickly. I was landing Jacks continuously in 2010-2011, but now i'm lucky to nab one every 6 months. I'm guessing the floods didn't help either. How did you go in the floods, were you affected?
He is doing so much better now, no sign of flukes. he is happy and healthy.
