When Is a tank too old?

cant beat a free 115gal tank for free! does the silicone seals have any bubbles at this time? I normally like to reseal all of my "new" used tanks I get on Craigslist with GE silicone I (not II, and make sure its without the anti mildew stuff) you should be able to get these from Home Depot or other hardware stores. It not the most fun thing to do, but I sure feel a whole lot better knowing my "tank" has fresh seals :)

search around this forum about re-sealing a tank, there are a lot of good information.

My 150 gal has been up and running since 1987.

crap i was born in 92 lol but back on subject one of my tanks is a 240 from god knows when. it is so old that it does not even have a stock center brace on it lol but it has really thick glass

Longevity is more a function of how it was taken care of. If it undergoes a lot of moves or has sat without water for long periods of time these things can take a toll on the silicone used to seal it. Glass or acrylic for that matter really dosent wear out. Acrylic can show scratches over time but they can be removed.

A good re-seal if needed and you will be back in business, just dont break the glass and you can essentially keep using it.

I have 2x glass 55s that are 25 and 26 yrs old that I use for qt and grow outs. Never resealed, scratched up but still in good shape.

From my experience the older the better.... now a days companys make the glass so thin and enough glue but tanks I had wow old ones I had make awesome tanks I have a 75 gallon reef tank and that tanks over 20 years old and its awesome it helps that I bought it from a doctor but yes its true it depends who had it and if it was taking care of....
